APN problems

Fri Jan 04, 2019 5:05 am

The BV9600 Pro doesn't seem to be loading the correct APNs for my carrier. Is the provider APN database on the phone out of date? I know my BV9500 had the same problem but it cleared itself up after an update. Right now I'm stuck on the 3G network only of my cell carrier.

I don't know how many people I have asked, but I always seem to get vague or evasive information. Is the  information part of some secret club I don;t have access to?  Where did the incorrectly populated APN's on my phone come from? Who do I have to go to get them fixed?  The carrier or the phone manufacturer?

Well I guess I'll have to answer my own question here. The APN settings are not "pushed" to the phone by the cell provider, nor are they stored on the SIM card, which would make a lot more sense.  The come from a database stored on the phone itself in system\etc\apns-conf.xml and loaded based on the mcc and mnc from the SIM card.  The only problem is, the apns-conf.xml file has incomplete settings for my cell carrier.  The proper MMS values are filled in for the 3G APN, but not for the 4G APN. So, the only way I can send or receive MMS messages is to stay on the 3G network.

The recent update did not change anything with regards to this file; the values are still missing.

How do I bring this to the attention of the engineers support the BV9600? The 3G network is 6 times slower than 4G.

Instead of helping me, the service person offered to return the phone for a refund.

Never mind, I rooted the phone and fixed the problem myself by editing apns-conf.xml and adding the missing MMSC information. I can now send and receive MMS messages on the 4G network.

But I shouldn’t have had to do that.

I am very disappointed in Blackview’s after-market support. Not only did they not understand the problem after my having explained it clearly a number of times and provided settings and videos of the problem, a complete analysis, and what to do to fix it, they asked the same questions over and over again. I do not even believe they passed this information on to the software engineers that are working on the android O/S of the phone.

I will definitely think twice about purchasing another phone from Blackview in the future.
