BV9900 Pro Bluetooth locks up with Gear Smartwatch

Wed Jul 01, 2020 5:24 pm

Bv9900 Pro. Had it for about two weeks. The latest firmware installed. Bv9900Pro_EEA_S900AA_V1.0_20200601V09_20200604-1934

I'm having issues connecting with my Gear S3 smartwatch. When I first set up the phone, everything connected smoothly.

To set up the Gear smartwatches, you have to download three apps. The Galaxy Wearable app, Samsung Accessory Service, and Gear S Plugin.

Everything was working well and my notifications were all working as they should. About an hour later my watch said it disconnected and I haven't been able to reconnect ever since. I tried re-pairing the watch to the phone, uninstalling and re-installing the associated apps, resetting the watch and nothing seems to work. The only thing I haven't done yet is factory reset the phone. The Bluetooth on the phone seems to be working correctly, I have no trouble connecting to my car stereo and other devices. The watch's bluetooth is also still working correctly, I was able to pair it to my old phone and use it throughout the day without issue.

I have disabled battery optimization for all of the associated apps, turned off intelligent power saving, I even tried turning off battery optimization for everything it would list in case there was some hidden overlap. No luck.

I'd rather not have to factory reset a phone that I just set up, does anyone or BVSupport know of a fix for this?

So bit of an update, I contacted support and am waiting to hear back from them. I was doing some troubleshooting in the meantime and found out a few things.

This issue happens only after you lock the phone and leave it alone for some time. So as long as the phone is "awake" and I'm using it, it will stay connected properly, notifications forwards correctly and all is well. I tested this a few times for over a few hours. Only after leaving the phone alone/"black screened" for ~20-30 minutes, they will lose connection and bug out.

After this bug happens, if I go to Settings -> Previously Connected Devices, I can see the Gear S3 listed. I select it and the phone will "connect" back to the watch and say it's now currently connected. At this point, it is bugged out and not really connected. The watch never sees this re-connection and is not working correctly. If I turn off the Bluetooth on the watch, it will disconnect on the phone. So there is some sort of communication going on.

I've made sure that all the Samsung apps have every permission enabled and unrestricted background use, but I don't think they are the problem. It seems like a software error somewhere. Possibly some other power-saving/battery function that is disabling Bluetooth after a certain amount of time when the phone is idle. Afterwards, some aspect of the Bluetooth's cache is getting corrupted and causing this half connection error.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

I solved the problem! I was right, it was being caused by some background powersaving app called "duraspeed". For whatever reason, when you search on the phone, you can only ever get the App Info page. Can't disable it or do anything really. No clue why. This is the source of your problems!

I downloaded an advanced file manager app called Solid Explorer File Manager, it's free on the Play Store. When it loads, go to System Apps and scroll down until you see DuraSpeed. Tap it and click Launch. You now can turn it OFF completely. As soon as I did this, my Gear immediately reconnected, all of the associated apps came on and everything is working perfectly.

If you're having issues with smartwatches, notifications, apps closing etc. I highly recommend trying this.

There is definitely something killing the processes after you close and lock the screen. Google Maps destinations are gone after a couple minutes of a closed screen which requires me to restart the directions every time I turn the screen back on. That's not good.
Smart watches and fitness trackers which should be able to run the whole time are stopped as well.
I've turned off battery power saving, I've turned of Duraspeed, I've allowed all these apps all the power permissions I can find, including the Bluetooth apps and systems apps that run them. What is the deal here?
What must be changed to allow an app to continue to run with the screen locked??
For your watch was there anything else you may have enabled or disabled?
If I can't even keep a Google maps destination or keep my fitness tracker synched this is going back!
