3.5mm Headphone Jack Compatability

Fri Mar 22, 2019 4:04 am

Everyone,

I made a video showing the issue & why only the Blackview headset is compatible completely with the phone & posted below.

Has anyone found a work around to share?

I have some ideas to test & will share later on what I come up with if it works.

Thank you for this, Colt.

I wouldn't have thought they'd have made a custom plug just for that small of a difference. Seems the dimension added by the rubber was an oversight.

There's really only one fix I can imagine and that's to thin out the rubber. My question is, which tool are ya gonna use too do it and how will it look when you're done?

I have the same problem with my plugs not staying in as well. I'll try the same measurement with my calipers and report my findings as well... If I remember to do so...

WORKAROUND:
I found a 2,5 - 2,5 male - female adapter, that fits the phone. with that you can plug in everything you want (of course i'm talking about headphones / aux input).
I don't know how it could be solved for headsets.

Anyway during last months, many products designed for rugged phones are popping up around on online stores

Cilone, thanks for the info!

Colt, my factory headphone plug measured 14.43 mm (0.5680 or 73/128 inches) while one PC speaker I have handy measured 14.18 mm (0.558 or 71/128) inches, same as a random 3.5-to-2.5 adapter cable I have just lying around.

You wouldn't think a 64th of an inch would make that much of a difference but my findings seem to match yours (I forget the numbers from your video but I recall the difference being negligible but significant at the same time). Like you, I find the longer plug stays in ever so slightly better.

So for you, do you shave around the jack on the phone or do you pick just a couple of plugs you want to use and shave their bases down?

My suggestion? stick to bluetooth headphones and get rid of cables and adapters! ;)

Then I'd like to file a bug:

When using Bluetooth adapter, recording video still comes from phone microphone instead of bluetooth, even when manually chosen in the Open Camera app to use any other microphone. No matter the setting, audio recording only happens with phone built-in mic.

Also, when using Intercom app, only phone microphone is used, never Bluetooth

There are legitimate reasons to use corded headsets. ;)

I have the BV9500, the non Pro, yet i did not experienced this issue.
I've tried headphones from my old samsung and asus phones, and even my old Razer Blackshark on it and it fits and works correctly (calls using the razer blackshark mic work fine and so on).
I dont have tool to measure it, but indeed the jack size that comes with the phone is like half a milimeter bigger then the "standard ones", yet the ones i stated above all worked correctly even with that difference.

I tried a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter & the phone doesn't recognize it.

I'm thinking about just using a drill bit to shave off some of the rubber around the jack since it isn't much.

Don't want to modify all the headphones I may use.

Will share my results.
