Shattered camera shield

Mon Jun 03, 2019 10:03 am

Hi,

I was afraid of this since I got the phone. Protruded camera port is an obvious weak point and - if we are talking about a rugged phone - a design flaw. Yesterday my BV9600Pro had splipped off my hand and fell on an asphalt surface on its back from no more than 40cm. Dent in plastic close to the bottom screw suggest the corner was the first point of contact with the ground but finally the glass camera shield was hit too and didn't withstand. Despite everything is still working I'm afraid the phone is no longer IP-68. Unless there is no light source in front of the camera, it's able to make fine shots. I had to remove a glass shard from my finger after examinig the damage...

Here how it looks like

Can this glass be replaced alone or entire back panel must be replaced?

In either case please tell the engineers they should never again make protruded camera ports in rugged phones. Thin rubber frame does not protect it at all :(

I've replaced mine twice. There is no need to remove the back but I recommend doing so anyway so you don't risk damage to the camera itself in the removal of the old seal. It's not difficult, you just need a T5 Torx screwdriver.

It should be covered under warranty as the phone is marketed as a rugged device able to withstand up to 1.8 meter falls. I contacted Blackview (I bought from them direct) when mine broke and they sent me two replacements with adhesive-backed foam seals.

If you purchase camera glass online (versus getting it via warranty coverage), be sure to get the adhesive-backed seal pad that matches the shape of the camera port, because there are some that just sell you thin strips which won't seal as well.

When removing the old padding, be sure to clean it all off of the backing and clean the plastic with rubbing alcohol prior to installing the new seal (the parts don't come with instructions, but not everybody knows you need to do this for better adhesion of the pad to the plastic).

Beyond that, it's pretty straightforward. Good luck!

Thanks for response. Screwdriver, solvents, and skills are no problem but I have rather bad experiences with contacting Blackview directly. I'd preffer to get one from somewhere else. Could somebody recommend one of those for example?

Years ago when glass in my electronic watch broke I cut a fragment of transparent ruler, painted it with plane model paint from the inside and glued into the case. Worked fine. Cutting glass is more difficult so the part is needed and that's good it's not expensive. All the rest is just detail. I can use even silicone glue to install it. If the glass will be a bit deeper after that it'll be better protected against damage in the future. Missing pad won't stop me :)

Well I got the back cover. It does come with the proper tape backing. Problem is, there is no connection to the SMA male for the antenna. I really wish there was just a source for the glass with the proper tape backing. How hard can this be to supply? Frustrating. I'm very close to giving up on Blackview.

So the antenna connector isn't there at all? Do you mean the SMA itself?

The connection to the SMA is just a set of three wipe contacts soldered onto the motherboard that fit up against the underside of the SMA when all is assembled.

But, if it's missing entirely...... Which I think it shouldn't be as it's clearly there in the photos in the link you provided......

Just yesterday I was screwing an SMA-to-BNC connector on so I could use a different antenna, and twisting the bayonet of the BNC, I twisted too much and the SMA connector itself spun in the case. If you're not worried about it being perfectly immobile, you might can spin it out of the old case and insert it in the new. However that seems a bit of a risk that you might not be able to get it into the new case.

I know this, I'm back and forth on my opinion of this hardware. One day I like it, the next I'm cursing it.
