It appears that in order to map the function button to the camera shutter, I need to root the phone :/

Volume keys default

I realise that, but I want to map the shortcut button to the camera shutter.
Reason being that I can then double press the power button to open the camera and then use the programmable button to operate the shutter--without having to turn the phone around. I'll be wearing ski gloves and anything that makes the camera easier and quicker to use is good.

+1 i need the Function Button as Camera Shutter, the Volume Buttons are on the wrong place to make photos.

I've had the short cut button (function key) on the lower right side as my camera button from day 1. I did exactly as described a few times already on above posts.
