New phone setup wizard crashes almost immediately

Hi all,
I recently received my BV9000Pro and the setup wizard, whether I choose to set up a new phone or with data from an existing Android phone, crashes as soon as the phone checks for updates. I had at least managed to input my WiFi password but that’s as far as it goes, no matter how many times I try, the app needs to restart every time.
I don’t really see any other option other than sending the phone back and possibly getting a refund as, if it can’t even get past the initial setup stage, I don’t think there’s a way to update faulty software even connecting it to a PC. Unless the forum has any suggestions? My desktop OS is Linux Mint if anyone has suggestions for software I can use to, say, reinstall firmware on the phone or something similar.
