A7 Pro erratic fingerprint scanner

Wed Aug 22, 2018 12:20 pm

Hi all.
I just got this phone for my birthday and am pretty pleased with it.

That was until I noticed that after I had locked the phone using the power button, I would get a few vibrations from the handset.
When I looked at the screen, it said "too many attempts" as is I had tried to unlock it using the fingerprint scanner.
This now happens frequently (3-4 times a day).

At other times, when I try to unlock the phone, the fingerprint scanner doesn't respond to any interactions.
This forces me to press the power button to wake the phone and proceed to unlock it with my pin code.
After I have unlocked it with my pin, the finger print scanner begins to respond to interactions again, as if the scanner itself was in a "sleep" mode.

So far, I've tried rebooting the handset, cleaning the scanner, ensuring the leather case has no debris interfering with the scanner and the phone's back-cover is free from dirt and anything that could obstruct the scanner like stray hairs. I've also deleted the original fingerprints and set new scans.

Is there anything I can do (without voiding my warranty) before sending the unit back to my seller?

Performing a total factory reset is the last step you can try.

I've completed a factory reset and it's still erratic. :(

I'm going to see if the seller can refund or replace the phone.

Shame, cos that's the only thing wrong with the phone. Everything else seems good.

Your seller will take care of that ;)

I have this same issue.
I bought the phone for my daughter to use and it randomly has issues with the fingerprint senser falsely triggering, causing the device to vibrate and weird things to happen with open apps. putting my finger on the sensor quiets it down, but sometimes when I take my finger off the sensor it just continues.
Is there anything I can do to rectify the issue? can the sensor be disabled?

The only alternative to contact your seller to have your device replaced under warranty is opening the phone and cutting the fingerprint sensor connections.

You can either disable the fingerprint sensor or reduce the apps that rely on the sensor in the settings.

The thing is, if you've just bought the handset or are simply un-willing to put up with this "fault" the the handset should be replaced.

My supplier finally agreed to refund the purchase of this handset and i'm currently reluctant to purchase the same model phone in case this is a fault with this model of phone rather than "a one-off" indecent.
It is a shame because everything else with/on the phone is great and if I wasn't after a handset with a fingerprint scanner, I would recommend the phone to anyone.

I find that when it's in my pocket, it's too easy for the power button to inadvertently pop the phone on (I've turned the lock off completely).

-So, I bet that is your problem, in that the phone thinks you're always trying to turn it on and so you'll get "too many tries".

Easy fix for me: Since I have that rubber protective case, I added two narrow ridges of tape (to the phone itself) on either side of the on/off button, so that the case now is pushed away from the phone a bit there, and sticks out a bit beyond the on/off button, keeping that from being accidentally depressed. -So far, it's now all good!
