[SOLVED] Phone stuck booting into TWRP after OTA Update

I allowed my BV8000 Pro to download and install the latest OTA update today. Process began normally until the phone rebooted itself - now it only boots into TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) which was installed onto the phone at an earlier point. TWRP has the option to flash a partition with a .img file. Could that be used to restore the phone back to normal functioning? Perhaps I can download a file to the removable SD card with my PC, and use that to get the phone working again?

I did try the recovery mode method posted here involving powering the phone on while holding the Volume+ button down, but the phone still boots into TWRP instead of factory recovery mode.

Please help?

Hi there,

Sorry but rooting or custom recovery/ROMS can't be officially supported by us, for obivous reasons.

By the way, i can tell you that, as a general rule, it's not reccomended to perform OTA updates on rooted devices.

You don't have the factory recovery anymore. Once you flash TWRP, it replaces the stock recovery partition.

As already said, you should never install an OTA update over a rooted phone, especially one with a custom recovery. Once the OTA file is downloaded, the phone is instructed to reboot intro recovery, whatever recovery you have installed, and will keep booting into recovery until the update is installed. In your case, the phone booted into TWRP.

But TWRP doesn't know how to install the downloaded OTA update file, so the update doesn't get flashed. When the stock recovery finishes installing an OTA update, it deactivates the "boot into recovery" mode that had been set up before, so your phone boots normally again. Since TWRP doesn't know about this, either, you're now stuck in a bootloop, always booting into TWRP.

I don't know if this would work,as I never trid myself, but you could try flashing just the stock recovery again and see if it manages to install the update and boot the phone normally, but I wouldn't bet on it. If this doesn't work, you should flash the whole firmware, using the provided flash tools. There's a very complete tutorial on this forum.

That was very helpful, Jman. I read a post elsewhere (a similar situation with a different phone) where it was suggested to just flash the stock recovery image. I have downloaded the newest ROM from Blackview and it contains multiple images (boot.img, cache.img, recovery.img, system.img, etc.) and I do see how to use TWRP to flash an image to a partition, so this is possible.

My only debate at this point is whether to try flashing just the recovery partition or all available partitions. It would be nice to flash just the recovery partition and have the phone continue as normal without losing all my apps, settings, etc. but I'm debating whether it would be safer to flash everything. Right now I have access to TWRP and can use that to flash partitions; If I overwrite the recovery partition only, I will lose that option if flashing recovery alone fails to fix the phone. I guess it comes down to whether there would still be a way to flash back to all-stock if the first option failed - like if the phone still failed to boot normally.

Can anyone else weigh in and suggest which option I should try? Thanks a lot btw!

I hope this solution can help others who may run into this issue in the future, not knowing to avoid the OTA updates on a rooted device until it's too late, as I did not know to avoid this myself!

Here's how I fixed the phone: I flashed three partitions using TWRP: Recovery, Boot, and System (in that order.) I obtained the image files I flashed by extracting them (using WinRAR) from the latest ROM download posted by Blackview. Happily, when I then rebooted the phone, it immediately displayed a dialog indicating it was completing the update that had originally been bolloxed by TWRP, and then the phone was able to reboot normally! I was also surprised to find that all my apps appear to be intact, despite my having flashed the system partition!

It may have been possible, as Jman suggested, to have just flashed the Recovery partition - especially since the update did try to complete itself after flashing - but I felt doing all three was safer.

Of course the phone is no longer rooted, but that's a small price to pay for a working device... and perhaps a task for another day. ;)

As stated before, rooting is not supported for obivous reasons. That's why the thread has been officially marked as "solved".
I would like to stress that this thread hasn't been closed ,to let you continue talking freely about your problem, although not officially supported. I could have closed it since the beginning. ;)

I'm glad to see my advice was helpful. Anyway, the system partition has nothing to do with your apps. User installed apps are in the data partition, which you didn't flash, so that's why you managed to keep them. System partition just contains system apps, and even data for system apps is also on the data partition.

Next time, if you keep using a custom recovery, I'd suggest making a system and data backup, which you can restore later if needed. Besides installing custom firmwares or rooting, that's the main reason to have a custom recovery.

Thanks guys. This was definitely a learning experience so I doubt I'll find myself in the same situation again. After all, my first experience with a PC was buying one at a garage sale back in the 90's and promptly breaking it by deleting the files that make DOS work. Then I had to learn how DOS works in order to fix it. Now I service PC's as an occupation, lol! ...and thank you for not closing the thread!
