Why is this phone difficult to charge?
I have to have the USB cable in the exact right position or it wont charge
Faulty cable, maybe, but I have no idea where to get a non-standard USB cable to charge this phone.
To make the issue more difficult it always thinks it charging, so knowing if its actually charging or not is an unknown factor
Those charging apps will even say the phone is charging with no cable plugged in
And if cable is not the problem then how can I reliably charge this phone?

yeah, it looks like a faulty cable.
You can buy another one (link in the bottom) or you can use the micro-usb or the OTG adapter provided with your phone.

To solve the fake charging status issue, i suggest to flash your device to the latest firmware version, and then perform a factory reset.
