update to the latest Firmware and perform a factory reset in recovery after that.
wipe data/factory reset in recovery (this will delete your data/settings):
- Power off and then press Power and Volume up together for around 10 Seconds
- be sure that the little arrow point on recovery (select with volume up, enter with volume down)
- Then the open android with red triangle+"no command" is shown press Power and Volume up together again
- Select Wipe data/factory reset with volume keys, confirm with power
- After factory reset select reboot system now
Please report if this solved your issue or not.

I rooted, upgraded to 7.0 then disabled Google Play services and forced an upgrade - that solved it

With google play services disabled, how did you force an upgrage ?
Was it an upgrade of google play services ? how ?
Did you use open gapps ?
I really would like to know how you executed your solution

After upgrading to nougat I still couldn't disable Google auto text services, which was causing the problem, so I Uninstalled Google play services which put it back to factory and opened a game on the phone, that forced an update which solved the problem.

Thanks ....
Never thought of this before!!!
Uninstall Google play services with a system apps remover.
And the game you played required Google play services so the system downloaded it from the play store.
So how did you go about installing it as a system app ?

Didn't use a system app remover (though I do have Titanium). In Apps, force stop, disable - OS simply removes latest update to the system app removing the conflict. Even now I have stopped Google itself from updating as I don't want there to be another conflict

"In Apps, force stop, disable - OS simply removes latest update to the system app removing the conflict. "

The update from google play was problematic so you removed it and disallowed the system to update ...
I think the solution is incomplete and bound to produce similar or other problems because of the necissity of the system to update google play services.
I think a better solution would be to remove the update as you did and then use a system app remover and remove google play services , then download and flash through twrp the latest minimal open gapps (pico version)
Why the minimal version ?
Because many of the included apps in gapps or open gapps will cause problems , which is probably why there are problems in the first place in your case.

As I said before , disabling google play services udating is not a complete , permanent or disirable solution .
