What do you mean by TWRP does not work ?
Did you use correctly the scatter file from the new ROM ?
New firmware should be rooted the same than previous firmware ... Nothing change !
You need to follow the different steps of various tutorials from internet.

I am on Nougat 7 and i've just flashed the Recovery (TWRP) with SP_Flash_Tool_exe_Windows_v5.1712.00 without problem except unresponsive screen when reboot in TWRP, but easy to solve with a OTG mouse.
Try it and tell me if you have problems.
If needed i'll could share a package with all tools and links useful for a complete working ROOT for BV6000 Nougat (SP Flash tools, Recovery TWRP, SuperSU, Viper4Android 5, BusyBox)

Tell me why there is no OTA update until 20180104? OTA update would simplify life for many. Well, or at least made for a local update.

Yes, TWRP and SU still work. Don't know why it took a few flashes though. (Got the android-robot with :!: several times).

Maybe the timing of button pressing is critical; I keep the vol+ pressed and then press the power button which I release when the phone boots while still holding vol+.

I never had this problem (but long press on buttons is really long ...)
If you are root it's the most important now. ;)

My TWRP took two flashes before it worked as well. But it's all good now.
Just got an updated for March 2018, installing it now.

Dear BlackView, please make a local update to 20180104 or include it in the OTA list
Not everyone has the opportunity to update with 20170708 with the help of Flash
How now to get OTA to 20180313?
