Working on 20170414:
- on IDLE mode turn the volume down to the minimum (enters vibration mode only)

You'll then be able to take pictures without hearing any sound

Why wait? I have installed this app "Camera ZOOM FX" and I'm very satisfied with it.
Root is superfluous.
There is a great selection of apps in GooglePlay.
