Confirmed as software issue from my end.
Got a 6800Pro for the kid. Straight out of the box, earpiece wasn't working
Did an OTA update, and now it works.
Will monitor to see if problem persists or reappears

However, I found a widget for my mail program Aquamail, it's on my main screen.
And low and behold, Aquamail is indeed started

Seems similar to this issue:

Maybe try to have a widget somewhere, to see if apps autostart? Hopefully if a fix is made for the 6800, there will be one for the 9600 as well...
